Parallax

The effect you see as you scroll down this page is Parallax.  It has been around for a little over a dozen years, but has really grown in popularity the past five or so as scripting parallax has become easier through WordPress.

The concept of parallax site design is where the background of the website moves at a different speed as the rest of the page for an impressive visual effect that allows for countless creative applications for online storytelling.

The one drawback of parallax is that it is not mobile friendly. All your images scroll at the same pace and you lose the storytelling effect. Not the end of the world, but something to take into consideration.

Parallax gives websites an opportunity to:

Wow viewers with page depth and animation

Take a story-telling approach to guide visitors through the site

Make page visits last longer by encouraging visitors to scroll through the entire page

Provoke curiosity

Direct visitors to calls to action

Reenforce website credibility with innovative interactive viewing

Video

Demonstrating more Parallax while now discussing video.

Let’s get creative with video. Both ConverttoGasCT.com and PowerThruthePowder.org use video to grab the attention of visitors. With 4K recording through iPhone and Samsung devices, content can look quite good when displayed on screen.  You don’t necessarily need professional equipment to make great videos for your website.

One thing to think about. Video is not always mobile friendly and will depend on the theme you choose and the size of the video playing. If this is a concern choose a theme with an image placeholder for users on mobile devices so they will see an image instead of a blank screen.
